The clinical rotations in medical school provide an opportunity to evaluate several fields of medicine. Students who favor otolaryngology go on to serve a five-year residency after graduation, learning the profession under the mentorship and watchful eye of seasoned practitioners. Once the residency is complete, the newly qualified otolaryngologist can become certified by writing and passing examinations from the American Board of Otolaryngology.
